The University of Art and Design Helsinki gives education and pursues research in the fields of design, audiovisual communication, art education and arts. There are eleven departments and seventeen fields of education and research.
The Art Education in Finland has a long history; UIAH´s predecessor; The School of Sculpture, started in 1871. The institutions history in the years 1871-1973 is illustrated in the work "INVITATION FROM THE FUTURE". The University has functionned in its present localities in Arabia´s factory since 1987. The largest project in the University´s history, Lume, the Finnish Centre for Media Research and Development will be ready in the summer of 1999. The mediacenter which is unique even from a global point of view, will gather under the same roof the departments of film and television, design for theatre, film and television and new media. With Lume the Arabianranta area will have its own cultural centre where the public will be served by a film and studio theatre, a gallery and an information centre.
