About this opportunity

(COMPANY NAME)'s mobile networks are used all over the world with a typical deployment of baseband units (BBU) and radio units (RU). Between these units, optical links (so-called fronthaul links) are used with varying distance and capacity. For each new mobile network generation, such as present 5G and emerging 6G, the required capacities grow, which challenges the fundamental limits of the optical and electrical components used for optical transmission. Consequently, both simulations and lab evaluations are necessary to understand which components, as well as their requirements, to be used for the next generation mobile optical fronthaul systems. The results both impact networks standardization (eg ITU, IEEE, OIF, MOPA) and subsequent product development.

What you will do

The following steps are envisioned as part of the thesis work:

* Survey the literature and short/near term available components and technologies to define the main mobile optical fronthaul system variants to be evaluated.
* Use existing models in Matlab, and add/enhance if/where needed, to simulate the main system variants from step 1 to evaluate and compare the performance.
* Select a few variants from steps 1 and 2 and evaluate in the lab.

The thesis will be concluded with a report and presentation for the (COMPANY NAME) team.

This project aims at students in electrical engineering and similar. Knowledge in optical and digital communication systems are required.
