Duties and Responsibilities
The (COMPANY NAME) Environment Programme (UNEP) is the (COMPANY NAME) system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional levels. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. United Nation's Environment Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. In line with Decision 26/14 on Programme of Work and Budget for 2024 - 2025 adopted by the 23rd Ordinary Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention (COP 23) held in Portoroz, Slovenia, from 5 to 8 December 2023, MED POL was mainly mandated to: 1- Support the Contracting parties in the implementation of 2021 Regional Plans under the LBS Protocol, through local, national, sub-regional, and regional actions; 2- Implement IMAP at the national and as appropriate sub-regional level taking into consideration the Mediterranean Quality Status Report 2023 (MED QSR) recommendations and preparing thematic analyses and assessments as requested by the Contracting Parties; 3- Strengthen national capacities to organize, upload, validate, and release IMAP data, and to establish a strong science-policy interface for the implementation of the ecosystem approach. The intern will work remotely under the supervision of the MED POL Programme Management Officer and will assist the unit in the implementation of activities of Programme of Work and Budget (2024-2025). The Internship is UNPAID and full-time (5 days per week). The intern will perform the following tasks: 1. Assist MED POL Unit in following up on the implementation of the agreement with IAEA for assisting the Contracting Parties of the Barcelona Convention to apply good laboratory practices, proficiency testing (PTs), and Quality Assurance/Quality Control protocols on monitoring data processing and reporting. 2. Support MED POL Unit in following up with the Contracting Parties of the Barcelona Convention to implement National IMAP-based monitoring programmes for EO5, and EO9, including data submission in IMAP Info System 3. Assist MED POL Unit in preparing the necessary documents, and presentations for the related meetings (Correspondence Group on Monitoring Meetings (CORMON), MED POL Focal Point Meeting, Ecosystem Aproach Coordination Group Meeting, etc.) 4. Assist in the development of legal agreements and ToRs. 5. Assist in the review of progress reports provided by the Contracting parties and the consultants on the implementation of legal instruments and ToRs. 6. Contribute to the preparation of semi-annual progress reports. 7. Support the development of a new/updated workplan for the Regional Cooperation Platform on Marine Litter, including meeting preparation. 8. Support the communication aspects of the 2023 Med QSR. 9. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/special skills
Be enrolled in a university degree program or have graduated with a university degree or have graduated with an advanced degree in Marine Sciences or Chemistry is required. working experience in environmental monitoring work previous working experience with scientific institutions, government agencies, or international organizations contribute to scientific publications and assessments related to marine and coastal environments
