TITLE: Education Intern (UNPAID)
LOCATION: Wichita, KS
START DATE: Fall 2024
DURATION: 2 Semesters (Fall 2024-Spring 2025)
HOURS: 12-15 hours/week
SALARY: UNPAID
This position reports to: EDUCATION MANAGER
BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. In addition, the IRC in Kansas provides community outreach, education and training, and case management services to victims of human trafficking and other at-risk individuals and families are served through employment services, job readiness training, adult education and immigration services.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Assist IRC staff with the coordination of the ELT/VELT and Digital Literacy classes including the child watch area. 

* Ensure proper coverage with volunteers is in place for the daily classes as well as for the child watch area; cover the child watch as needed.

* Adhere to IRC policies, particularly those related to confidentiality and client privacy. 

* Support teachers in the preparation of the student material for the classes.

* Help prepare and maintain resources for the child watch area, including the schedule of volunteers, best practices, and guidelines. 

* Assist with the volunteer training for teachers and for the child watch area. 

* Assist in the collection of the data to complete reports per stakeholder's request. 

* Ensure client success with a strong emphasis on education and empowerment through high quality service that encourages clients to thrive in their community. 

* Practice sensitivity to cultural and personality differences of clients by respecting their beliefs and values. 

* Help greeting clients and connecting them to appropriate class and give information regarding the child watch area services while they are in the classes. 

* Help connecting the clients to interpretation services when necessary.
* Other support and help may apply as needed.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Intern will learn about the IRC locally and globally, the available services to refugees and ORR-eligible clients in Wichita, Kansas. 
Intern will develop critical thinking skills, client services skills, and intercultural social work skills.
Intern will learn how to manage classes and supporting services within the established requirements, to provide the best service possible to vulnerable populations. 
In-depth training will be provided for interns regarding programming and the various needs of clients accessing services.

TIME COMMITMENT:
For the sake of stability and continuity, the IRC asks for a minimum commitment of 6 months, with at least 12 hours per week. Monday-Thursday 9:30am-12:30pm, Fridays (hours based on intern availability)

Minimum Qualifications:
REQUIREMENTS:

* A high-level of confidentiality is required when working with IRC clients.

* Current enrolled or recent undergraduate level studies in Education, Social Work,
* International Relations, Social Sciences, or related field. 

* Language: Multilingual preferred but not required. Translation experience is a plus.

* Cultural awareness of and sensitivity to vulnerable populations, and a powerful desire to help refugees to adjust to life in the U.S. 

* Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail 

* Culturally competent and effective communication skills.

* Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment. 

* Patience, understanding, flexibility with a consistent positive attitude. 

* Engaged in learning about broader IRC mission, philosophy, global work, and local efforts. 

* Willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.
